The Top 10 Ways to Make
Buyers Hate Your House

Here are a few pointers to prep your home and help turn it into an irresistible and marketable home.

1) De-Personalize your home. Pack up those family photographs and family heirlooms. You want buyers to visualize the home as their own, and not feel like they're in someone else's home. You want buyers to say, "I can see myself living here."

2) De-Clutter your home. People can collect an amazing amount of junk. This can vary from refrigerator magnets to crammed bookcases. Remove all books from bookcases - clean off that refrigerator - pack away those knickknacks - clean off everything from the kitchen counters - and get rid of those newspapers and magazines!  Keep on top of this every day.

3) Make your house shine. Wash windows inside and out, clean out cobwebs, re-caulk tubs, showers, and sinks. Polish chrome faucets and mirrors. Clean out the refrigerator. Replace worn rugs and vacuum daily. Hang up fresh towels - those designer towels you never use. Clean out smelly areas - and get an air freshener or two.

4) Make minor repairs. Replace cracked floor or counter tiles, patch holes in walls, fix leaky faucets, fix doors and kitchen drawers. Consider painting your walls a neutral color. Replace burned out lightbulbs. If you use low wattage light bulbs, replace them with brighter ones.

5) Rent a storage unit. Most homes show better with less furniture. Remove furniture that blocks paths and put them in storage. Since your bookcases are now empty, remove them too. Remove extra leaves from your table. Leave just enough furniture in each room to showcase the room's purpose, and have plenty of room to move around. Make the rooms look as large and uncluttered as possible.
